NSCA FLY SOLO MENTOR HOLDS FIRST INTERNATIONAL CYBER CHAMP…
The NSCA Fly Solo Program took another step forward last week at Sauk Prairie High School, Wisconsin where Patrick Leigh hosted the first international “Cyber Champ Competition.” Fourteen Sauk Prairie High School athletes competed against athletes from Tucson, Arizona and Powys, United Kingdom. This competition evaluated their performance based on a series of tests including: the vertical jump, the 10-yard dash, the proagility run and the hang clean.

Strength Training Trends Heighten in the United States
A recent study published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found that the number of adults who strength train two or more times per week increased from 17.7% in 1998 to 19.6% in 2004. Although this increase is significant, it is far below the 30% by 2010 objective set by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and the CDC.

Baechle Retiring From NSCA
The NSCA has announced that Thomas R. Baechle, EdD, CSCS,*D; NSCA-CPT,*D, the Executive Director of the NSCA Certification Commission, will retire from his position effective July 15, 2007. Baechle has served in his role since the Commission's inception in 1992 and has been involved with the National Strength and Conditioning Association since the organization held its first meeting in 1978.

NSCA Implements Steroid Education Program
The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is getting set to educate the educators about what steroids are and how they affect the human body. Two Steroid clinics will be given to help teach those closest to student athletes the dangers of steroid use; the first will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California on Saturday, August 20, 2005 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The second will take place in San Ramon California on Sunday, August 21st at the San Ramon Marriott from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

Rash of NFL Injuries Not Result of Strength Training and Conditioning
The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) doubt suggestions that the recent outbreak of NFL injuries is caused by the increase in strength training and conditioning of athletes.
The large number of injuries in the NFL is a concern. A recent article stated that 31 players have sustained season ending injures compared to 15 last year at this time. Among the speculative reasons for these disturbing statistics has been that somehow strength and conditioning programs could contribute to the rising number of injuries.

Are Firefighters Getting a Complete Fitness Evaluation? Study finds more tests should be done for improved job performance
Firefighters have a hard job. They must perform tasks such as pulling fire hose, carrying equipment, forcibly entering structures, and carrying victims to safety—all while battling dangerously high temperatures. Fighting fires taxes virtually all aspects of physical fitness, yet many firefighters are only evaluated on cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. Is this minimal amount of testing enough to prepare for the severity of the job?

Get Your Foot In The Door: Strength and Conditioning Internships Presented
The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently awarded three paid assistantships to students interested in the strength and conditioning profession through its new Student Assistantship Program. The NSCA Student Assistantship Program is the first placement program of its kind in the strength and conditioning industry that unites students with experienced coach practitioners. The following student assistants were chosen based on their high academic achievements and interest in pursuing strength and conditioning as a career. As part of the program, each recipient will receive a $10,000 stipend over a 12-month period.

Get on the Ball: Study identifies best exercise for total abdominal muscle stimulation
The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently published a study in its scientific journal, The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (Vol.17, No. 3, Aug. 2003, page 475 – 483) that finds abdominal crunches performed on a stability ball, elicits significantly higher muscle activity (more muscle fibers stimulated) in both the upper and lower portions of the abdomen than do other abdominal exercises studied.

New Study Supports Combined Strength and Endurance Training
The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently published a study in its official scientific journal, The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (Vol.17, No. 2, page 393 – 401) that confirms concurrent strength and endurance training is more effective in improving athletic performance than are either endurance or strength training separately. This is contrary to previous studies, which found combined training inhibits muscle and power improvements.

Stay Healthy in the Heat
With temperatures continuing to reach all-time highs, the same concern echoes across the country—Is it too hot to exercise outside? To help coaches and trainers increase the safety and performance for athletes engaged in physical activity, especially in warm and hot environments, an Inter-Association Task Force on Exertional Heat Illness was formed to address and review heat illness research, and create consistent information between all health-related organizations.

Periodization Symposium Teaches Advanced Concepts
With more athletes training for specific goals, such as marathons, road races, or peaking at just the right time during the season, coaches with periodization expertise are essential.

Study indicates that magnetic therapy does not increase athletic performance
The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently published a study in its official scientific journal, The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (Vol.17, No. 2, page 299 – 302) that confirms magnetic therapy—in the form of shoe insoles—does not improve physical performance. The results show that those looking to enhance physical performance by reducing fatigue through the use of magnets should look elsewhere for a magic training bullet.
