S.M.A.R.T. is the acronym for Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Realistic and Time framed and it is generally accepted to be a useful method to apply to your goal setting process.

Specific means that the goal should include some kind of measuring unit like kilos, pounds, centimetres, inches, seconds etc.

You can ask the athlete or fitness client one or more questions to help them identify the specific aspect of their goal:

In the One Minute Millionaire, Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen write that “the size of the question, determines the size of the result.

Here are some different questions of different sizes. The questions are applicable to fitness training, strength and conditioning and to some extent also sport performance

  • What is the limiting factor for training and performance? (athletes)
  • What accomplishment would focus me every day?
  • What accomplishment would make me enjoy my training and challenge me?
  • What would I enjoy accomplishing, if I had unlimited potential and ideal resources (time etc)?
  • How strong, powerful, fast, etc would I be if I were a world class athlete?

Maybe you can come up with other (and better?) questions.

It is important not to hold back, not to be “realistic”. It is said that self-actualized people have to be everything that they can be.
